In the industry, we design for performance during a typical consumption window. A cup should feel sturdy from the first sip to the last. For a hot beverage, this is usually one to three hours. During this time, the internal PE or PLA lining does a great job of preventing leaks. However, the paper fibers themselves can slowly absorb moisture from the steam or from any liquid that touches the raw paper edge of the rim. This absorption of moisture is what makes a cup slowly lose its rigidity. A single-wall cup will feel this effect the most. A double-wall or triple-wall ripple cup, however, has outer layers that stay completely dry and protected from this steam. Yes, double- and triple-layered cups keep coffee hot for significantly longer than single-layered cups. The air trapped between the layers acts as an excellent insulator, dramatically slowing down how quickly heat escapes from the cup.

The science here is simple but very effective. Heat naturally wants to move from a hot area to a cold one. In a single-wall cup, the heat from your coffee conducts directly through the paper to your hand and the surrounding air. Paper is a better insulator than glass or ceramic, but it's still not great on its own. A double-wall cup changes the game entirely by creating a pocket of air between the inner and outer cup walls. Air is a very poor conductor of heat. This trapped air acts as an insulating barrier, preventing the heat from escaping so quickly.

A three-layer ripple cup takes this even further. The "S" shaped, corrugated paper that's sandwiched between the inner and outer layers creates dozens of tiny air pockets. Paper coffee cups are coated on the inside with an ultra-thin layer of either polyethylene (PE), a food-safe plastic, or polylactic acid (PLA), a compostable plant-based bioplastic.

This coating is the key to the entire product. Without it, you would just have a paper cone that falls apart in seconds. For decades, the industry standard has been PE, or polyethylene. It's a very thin, heat-sealed layer that is completely waterproof and inert, meaning it doesn't react with your coffee at all. It's the same safe material used for milk cartons and plastic food containers.

More recently, sustainability has become a huge focus for us and our clients. This has led to the rise of PLA, or polylactic acid. I am really passionate about this material. It's a bioplastic made from renewable resources like corn starch. PLA provides the same excellent waterproof barrier as PE, but with a major environmental benefit: it is commercially compostable. In an industrial composting facility, a PLA-coated cup can break down completely, along with the paper, in about 90 days. Choosing between PE and PLA is a decision I help my clients make every day, balancing cost, performance, and environmental goals.

To preserve a paper coffee cup, you must first clean and dry it completely. Rinse it gently with cool water, then let it air dry for several days until no moisture remains. Store it in a dry place away from direct sunlight.

I've had clients ask me this before, especially after we've created a beautiful custom design for them. The two biggest enemies of a paper cup are moisture and sunlight. First, you have to get rid of any residue. Don't use hot water or soap, as that can damage the inner lining and seams. A gentle rinse with cool water is best. The most critical step is drying. You must let it air dry completely. Don't use a towel, as that can leave lint and might crush the cup. Just place it upside down on a rack in a well-ventilated area for at least 48 to 72 hours. You need to be sure that any moisture trapped in the paper fibers, especially in the tightly rolled rim, has fully evaporated. Once it's bone dry, store it away from direct sunlight, as UV rays will cause the colors in the printing to fade over time. A display case or a dry box is a perfect place to keep your paper cup memento safe for years.
